Helping Families and Friends Honor Their Loved One
Margie Theressa Marcus Wortham

Margie Theressa Marcus Wortham

Margie Marcus was the first child of William and Aquilla Lewis Marcus. Born in Haynesville LA. She had five siblings: Mattie, William Jr., Bobby, Mabel, and Douglas; all preceded her in death. Her parents stressed “sticking together, helping each other.” She remained a member and attended Friendship Baptist Church when “home.”
Her prayers for her children reflected faith and hope. She voiced hope that “people do better,” and “God will take care of it” when disaster occurred. These expressions were surreal during peaks of personal travails not foreign to a Black, poor woman in America. Her faith, hope, family, and love for her children sustained her.

Margie attended the “Colored” public schools of Haynesville through eleventh grade. She married Raymond Clifton Wortham Sr. January 15, 1947; her husband was later deployed to the Korean Conflict. They had children Raymond Jr., Roger, Donald, Belinda, Brenda, Jerry, Jasper, Tyron, Arnold, Bruce, and Andre. Raymond Jr., Raymond Sr., Jerry, and Bruce preceded her in death.
She lived near her children in several cities and settled in New Orleans 25 years ago. She loved travel, sports, cooking, independence, walking, cleaning, and family ingatherings, which symbolized “sticking together, helping each other.” A fall, as she cleaned using a step stool, caused her death.
Surviving loved ones appreciate the simple purity of this vibrant woman’s values of love, hope, faith, and togetherness. “Madea” will be dearly missed.
