Helping Families and Friends Honor Their Loved One
Claire R. Battiste

Claire R. Battiste

Claire R. Battiste departed this life at 93 years old. She passed away peacefully and received her wings on October 17, 2022. Her departure reminds us that angels are watching over us. Born Claire Rose Clavo, she was the daughter of the late Arthur Clavo and Norma Reine Clavo. Claire was raised in New Orleans and grew up in the 7th ward where she and her husband owned their own restaurant and bar. Claire was a seamstress by trade at Wembleys, as well as a crossing guard for the 3rd district police department at Parkview Elementary School. Claire or Mom Battiste as she was known, was a lifelong active member of St. Gabriel the Archangel Roman Catholic Church. She was a member of the Altar Society and received the Order of St. Louis IX Medallion, an award for extraordinary services to the church. Claire is survived by her children Samuel A. Battiste III (Beverly), Sharon B. LeBlanc, (Josh) and Edith A. Battiste, Son-in-law Ralph A. Gaspard, (Joycelyn) and Barbara Hornsby. Her grandchildren, Janelle B. Jessie (Elliot), Ralph A. Gaspard II, (Rachel), Samuel A. Battiste IV, (Bree’Anne), Toni O. Battiste, Anthony J. Battiste, Jade Forest, Quiana Jones, and Kristen Scott (Thomas). Great grandchildren, Gabrielle and Elijah Gaspard, SaMon Costley, Sanaa, Semaj, Bailey and Ryenn Battiste, Bailey D. Anthony, Andrew Jasmin, Kenzi and Karsyn Scott, Alexis and Dominic Hornsby and three sisters-in-law, Mary Chevalier, Naomi Clavo and Doretha Clavo and a host of Relatives and Friends. She was proceeded in death by her husband, the late Samuel A. Battiste Jr., daughters Sylvia Ann Battiste and Linda Battiste Gaspard. Her siblings, the late Eloise Alexis, Arthur Clavo Jr., Raymond Clavo, Alvin Clavo and George Chevalier. Claire never remarried after the death of her husband, and we take comfort knowing that she will be rejoined with him. Our mother was a gift from God to demonstrate His love for us. No one could ever love us like God but our mother. But we take solace in the fact that we’ll meet again someday.

To Sam, Sharon, Edith and the Battiste’s Family, we pray for your strength, unity, and reliance on God’s word to get you through this time of loss. May your memories and Claire’s legacy bring all of you comfort and peace during this time, and may her memory be a blessing. Your mother was the kindest, sweetest, most beautiful lady, and truly a God-loving woman. We were honored to spend time with her over the years. She taught us valuable lessons, about taking care for family and growing in our faith. Claire (Mom) will forever be in our hearts and her legacy of love will live forever.
