Helping Families and Friends Honor Their Loved One
Barbara Leah Schneider

Barbara Leah Schneider

Barbara Leah Schneider, –  age 80, died peacefully at home in New Orleans, LA surrounded by family. She was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Al and Ruth Schneider. Barbara is survived by her loving daughters, Roberta Rahmer and her husband John of Sloatsburg NY, and Alissa Bartkus and her husband James of New Orleans, LA.; her five “grands,” Malachy, Jacob, Finnian, Zachary and Maevy; her brother, Michael Schneider and his wife Barbara of Livingston, NJ and their children; her former husband and childhood friend, Robert Schiffer; and many loving cousins and friends.

Barbara was a long time resident of New York, growing up in Astoria, moving to Long Beach, and residing many years in Northport. She worked over 25 years for Gurwin Jewish Geriatric Center as an office manager, where she was well loved by both staff and residents. In her late 50’s, she pursued her lifelong dream of receiving a college education. She loved all animals and children, and especially loved taking long walks while collecting sea shells at Fire Island Field 5 (to the left of the lifeguard stand). She also volunteered her time by giving tours of the Fire Island Lighthouse. Barbara had a fierce devotion to family and friends, and was especially proud of her five grandchildren who were equally devoted to her. A special thanks to the loving caregivers at Serenity Home and Notre Dame Hospice. Barbara will surely be missed, as each day in her presence was a glorious day. Memorial service announcement pending. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in her memory to the Fire Island Lighthouse. Bird & Liss – I wish I could express how much I appreciate how great your mom was to us all when we were kids. Those summers going to Robert Moses together are some of my favorite memories. At the time, it seemed those days would last forever. I always loved when she would ask me if the water was cold. I would say no. She’d test it with a toe or perhaps a whole foot and scream that it was freezing.

As we grew into adulthood, she was still as warm and wonderful as ever, always welcoming and friendly.

    My deepest condolences.

I only met Barbara a few times but she certainly left a great impression on me. My deepest sympathy to the entire family.

My heartfelt sympathy to your family at this difficult time. May all the memories gathered during your Mom’s, Granmom’s, life bring warmth to your heart and eventually laughter and joy. It was a pleasure to have worked with Barbara and I remember her well and her warmth. God Bless.
